This thesis focuses on a relatively systematic study of English and Chinesemetaphorical idioms from the perspective of frame semantics and attempts to providea cognitive interpretation for the similarities and dissimilarities of English and Chinesemetaphorical idioms from the perspective of frame semantics and subsequentlyexplore translation strategies for English metaphorical idioms. The generation ofmeaning relies heavily on cognitive frames, and linguistic expressions function both astriggers to activate and as anchors to stabilize the cognitive frames. Therefore thefunction of translators is to come up with in the target language the linguisticexpressions which activate the cognitive frames identical or similar to those in thesource language. Because metaphorical idioms are accepted through common practiceand huge differences are inevitable in terms of frame constructions, the translator haveto reconfigure the framework of the frame elements, so as to avoid cultural conflicts.Adopting frame semantics as its theoretical basis, the thesis performs a comparativeanalysis of metaphorical idioms between English and Chinese with its focus on thesimilarities and differences in vehicle elements. Then the basic theories of framesemantics are applied to the translation practices, where elaborations are made on thetranslation processes, basic principles and strategies that should be followed in the E-Ctranslation of metaphorical idioms.
