| With its relaxing and lively stylistic features, entertainment news, as one of themost common news types in people’s daily life, enjoys masses of readers. Chinesepeople become interested in foreign entertainment culture with the ongoingglobalization and the popularization of information technology. However, Englishentertainment news can not be fully understood by Chinese readers due to its loosesentence patterns, casual wording and phrasing, and bunches of oral expressions andslangs. Although researches on news translation theories and practices have gainedgreat attention by scholars, researches related to entertainment news translation are farfrom sufficient. Thus, the necessity and significance of translating Englishentertainment news into Chinese versions are highlighted.As a mature theory system, functionalist translation theory provides greatguidance for E-C entertainment news translation. The study explores how to deliverthe original information correctly and effectively to the target readers with theguidance of text typology, Skopos Theory, translational action theory and function plusloyalty put forward by German functionalists.Fifty pieces of English entertainment news selected from top five Englishentertainment news websites are studied to clear up the functions and the stylisticfeatures of English entertainment news. Entertainment news has two functions: thebasic informative function and the essential entertainment function. The study exploresthe stylistic features from the aspects of vocabulary, grammar and structure. With theguidance of functionalist approach and based on a corpus of100translated parallelentertainment news reports, the study proposes three principles for E-C entertainmentnews translation: maxim of attraction, maxim of concision and maxim of readability.The study also comes up with four strategies for the translation practice, namelyaddition, deletion, condensation and restructuring. |
