With the increasingly frequent exchanges and cooperation between domesticuniversities and international institutions of higher learning as well as researchinstitutes, online news, as a window of universities to the outside world, is now moreimportant than ever before, in that it tells the outside world the educational andresearch progress of the universities in a convenient and efficient manner. Therefore, universities and colleges in China have attached great importance to the translation ofnews on their websites.Currently, however, the translation quality of universities’ online news is farfrom optimistic. Such problems as Chinglish and even mistranslation have hinderedthe international readers from better understanding the development of the universityand thus international communication and exchanges could be undermined.Ocean University of China (OUC), as one of the national key universities listedin the “Project211” and “Project985”, is carrying out its internationalization strategy, determined to enhance its international exchanges and cooperation. There is a team oftrained translators in OUC engaged in the translation of the university’s online news.In their work, they have plenty of news of various subjects to be translated. Theybelieve that universities and relevant translators are in urgent need for a guideline fortheir work as well as a set of methods or strategies suitable for the translation ofuniversities’ online news. As a member of the team, the author of this thesis, probesinto the C-E translation of OUC online news based on the Functionalist TranslationTheories. So far, a great number of scholars and translators have carried out studies fromvarious perspectives on the characteristics and translation of online news. However, they seldom tailored their studies for the online news translation of domesticuniversities. As far as the author is concerned, no one has ever conducted any studyspecifically on the online news translation of OUC.The Functionalist Translation Theories, which emerged in the1970s, brokethrough on the traditional equivalence-based theories and focused on the purpose oftranslation. The Functionalists advocate that translation is a purposeful cross-culturalcommunication activity, which provides new perspectives for modern translationstudies. In this thesis, the origin and development of the Functionalist TranslationTheories are reviewed to form the theoretical framework of this study, which iscomprised of Katharina Reiss’ text typology theory, Justa Holz-M ntt ri’s theory oftranslational action, Hans J. Vermeer’s skopos theory and Christiane Nord’stranslation-oriented text analysis.Based on the Functionalist Translation Theories, the author of this thesis takesthe online news of OUC as example, and gives a qualitative analysis on the featuresand functions of OUC online news and special requirements for its translation, in abid to find out factors which can influence the translation process. The author aims tojustify the application of the Functionalist Translation Approaches to the translation ofOUC online news. With the news samples selected from OUC’s websites, Guan Hai Ting Tao, andbased on the functions and translation purposes of the texts, the author adopts themethod of case study and lists several translation methods and strategies which havealready been used in their work and turned out to be efficient. The methods andstrategies discussed include parallel texts as references, re-organizing, summarizing, amplification, omission and paraphrase. The author hopes that these methods orstrategies can be helpful to the follow-up OUC news translators with respect to theironline news translation. The author hopes to provide new perspectives for the translation work on OUConline news and that the quality of the translation can be further improved, so that theonline news will better present the image of the university and promote thecross-cultural communication and cooperation between OUC and research institutes abroad. Meanwhile, as the online news of OUC share great similarities with those ofother domestic universities and colleges, it is also expected that the analysis in thisthesis could provide new ideas and even instructions for translators from otheruniversities. The significant role of Functionalist Translation Theories in thetranslation work of online news of domestic universities deserves more and deeperstudies by translators and relevant scholars. The author calls on more experts andpractitioners to pay attention to the study on the translation of domestic universities’online news as well as to the wider application of the Functionalist TranslationTheories.
