Effects Of Netspeak On English Learning: A Contrastive Analysis On English And Chinese Netspeak

Netspeak, as a new kind of language, has developed very fast since itsappearance during the past forty years. The number of netizens has increased veryquickly and as a result, the number of netspeak users has also risen. More and morepeople begin to use netspeak and its influence has extended into the daily life. Thisthesis aims to make a comparison between Chinese and English netspeak on the basisof the word-formation rules by analyzing the examples of netspeak. Through thecontrastive description of Chinese and English netspeak, it also investigates thereasons of development of netspeak and the attitude from different countries towardsthe way to standardize netspeak. After this detailed analysis of netspeak, the influenceof netspeak on English learning under the special environment of China has beenstudied in order to put some suggestions to the English learners in China and improvetheir learning efficiency. Results show that netspeak has influenced English learningin China. It can improve language learners’ interests and enlarge their vocabulary. Atthe same time, it may lower people’s oral English communicative competence andreduce the standardization of English. According to these effects, in order to makenetspeak develop in the way of promoting the language development, it is necessaryto limit the range of the application of netspeak and make use of the positive aspectsof it.
