| The study on conceptual metaphor has undergone a very long period of time with abundant accomplishment. However, researches conducted in sports news field mainly focus on the WAR metaphors, making other kinds of metaphors which are also pervasive in sports news lack of noticing. Under this circumstance, the author tries to classify as many types of metaphors in the Sports News Headlines, aiming to find out the differences between English and Chinese metaphors in sports news headlines, to what extent they differ and the causes of the differences.The data were selected from the ESPN website, a multilingual website, with English and Chinese as the top two representative languages. From this website, the author got 1024 news headlines,430 in Chinese and 594 in English, dating from 15th December,2010 to 15th January, 2011. By using the table of random number proposed by Black in the year 1992,200 data were selected from each of the two groups of sample respectively, and these 400 data forms the basis for the research on conceptual metaphor in English and Chinese news reports headlines with both qualitative and quantitative as the research methods.The findings of the study reveal that the metaphorical concepts in two languages are basically the same due to the similar cognitive model of human beings. However, the usage of some of the metaphorical concepts varies from Chinese to English news headlines. This thesis aims to lead readers to probe deeply into the working mechanism of conceptual metaphor, in the meantime, have a clearer understanding towards those factors that may lead to those similarities and differences.
