Style has always been an important notion throughout the literary tradition. However, understandings of it vary greatly and are far from clear. With theassistance of linguistic tools, stylistics brings a scientific and objective perspectiveinto the study of style. Drawing on both linguistics and literary criticism, theintermediary discipline literary stylistics offers a less subjective yet equally or moreprofound way of text analysis. Numerous practice in literary criticism from stylisticapproaches testifies to the vitality of this mode of analysis. However, literary translation practice and criticism, two fields closely connectedwith literary criticism, still remains to a large extent, intuitive and impressionistic. Alack of emphasis on the stylistic values of literary text is a major factor hindering theimprovement of literary translation quality and literary translation criticism. This thesis attempts to demonstrate the thematic or aesthetic values of variousstylistic devices in The House on Mango Street and examine how well the Chinesetranslation retains these values. The aim is to testify to the significance of a stylisticperspective for the development of translation studies as well as for literarytranslation practice.
