Cultural Images In Interpreting-obstacles And Coping Strategies

Interpreting is currently playing an indispensable part in China’s increasinglyfrequent interactions with the outside world. However, interpreters are constantlyfaced with challenges arising from cultural images in both Chinese and English,which often carry profound connotations that are hugely distinctive and are thusdifficult, sometimes even impossible to interpret, causing miscommunications andmisunderstandings.This thesis aims at, through case study, analyzing the obstacles arising fromcultural images in interpreting, dividing them into various categories and proposingcoping strategies accordingly. Major strategies include retaining, converting anddeleting the original images. The messages in interactions can thus be conveyed in amore precise and explicit manner, a result beneficial to improving the quality ofinterpretation and promoting international cultural exchanges.
