In this paper, The Viewpoint of Happiness of Mill Utilitarianism was chosen as thetopic, analyzing the forming process of his thought, dissecting the deep connotation of histhought, critically pointing out the essence of his thought content and its limitations. Theinterpretation of happiness provides us with a good foundation and a new perspective tointerpret the problems of happiness, offering the theoretical reference to study andconstruct the "happiness" in today’s society.First of all, this paper combs the process of its coming into being. The backgroundinformation of Mill’s viewpoint of happiness is known through the introduction of thethought origin and his bumpy but extraordinary story of his life.Secondly, this paperdiscusses Mill’s inheritance, modification and development of Jeremy Bentham’s thoughtof utilitarianism. To illustrate this important thought, this paper interprets it from fouraspects and carries out problems, such as "what is happiness","the greatest happinessprinciple","happiness and justice","happiness and freedom" etc, on the system analysisand argument. All the core concepts that mentioned above help us to understand the mainideas of the thought. Thirdly, this paper analyses the contribution and limitations of Mill’sviewpoint of happiness, affirms the rationality of the theoretical study and the studyingmethod and expounds its enrichment and development to utilitarianism thought system. Atthe same time, the paper analyzes the insufficiency of the methods in the argumentationand the limitations it exposed by using Marxist theory method. Finally, it digs out theenlightenment of The Viewpoint of Happiness of Mill Utilitarianism to today’s society,combined with the contemporary social people’s understanding of happiness, from theviewpoint of Marxist ethics.
