South Henan Flower-Drum Lantern is regarded as the most representative,complete and systematic folk dance in Xinyang region. It has been playing a veryimportant role in the evolution of the local folk dance for centuries, and has formed asolid base from which, many other art forms are split and evolved.With the rise of multicultural education and the reform of basic educationcurriculum, local courses as a crucial part of the national curriculum system, aregradually being recognized, developed, redesigned and implemented. There is a trend ofthe contemporary music and dance education to inherit one’s own regional/nationalmusic and dance culture while trying to recognize and understand that of others’.Complying with the Basis of the Basic Education Curriculum Reform Program and theNational Undergraduate Curriculum Guidance for Musicology, this thesis propose toincorporate South Henan Flower-Drum Lantern into local advanced normal curriculumby leveraging the tradition of non-material cultural heritage upon the multiculturaleducation background. The objective is to promote local music and dance culture,stimulate the heritage and innovation of folk art, and push forward the reform of basiceducation/the curriculum construction in colleges and universities.The thesis is divided into four parts. The first chapter provides an overview ofhistorical changes and art forms of South Henan Flower-Drum Lantern. The secondchapter constitutes a macro analysis of its cultural values in4aspects: history, region,folk culture and culture inheritance. Chapter3refers to a research report, which providesa factual basis to the study, extracted from a survey on the educational status of SouthHenan Flower-Drum Lantern and the cognition among students. The last chapterincludes the necessity and feasibility analysis for South Henan Flower-Drum Lanternbeing incorporated into the curriculum of local advanced normal colleges. Furthermore,a constructive proposal is also attached in this chapter specifying the course objectives,course content, teaching, and evaluation methods.
