A Grammar Study Of Qunjingpingyi

Yu Yue (俞樾) is famous for his study of Confucian classics,philology and textual criticism. His works was always in the formof reading notes, with his profound ideas about Confucian classicsand the thinkers.Qunjing Pingyi (《群经平议》) is a representative work of hisown academic achievement, meanwhile, is also one of the greatestrepresentative works of the academic achievement in Late QingDynasty. Under every scripture, he put detailed notes to check thepunctuation and literal meaning, analyze the special appearance ofgrammar and rhetoric, like word flexible uses, object anastrophe,and so on, with many subtle findings. This book is also called ashis achievement of collating and explaining classics. He had saidthat his book could be compared with Jingyi Shuwen (《经义述闻》)by Wang Yinzhi (王引之).This paper studies the materials about grammar senses fromShangshu (《尚书》) and Maoshi (《毛诗》) in Qunjing Pingyi (《群经平议》), comprehensively and scientifically digs their grammarsenses. It is welcomed to analyze and summarize the types of Yu’sgrammar senses in these points: analysis of parts of speech, waysof word-formation, word flexible uses, word order, syntax and itsanalysis method. This paper uses the way of combination with analysis and description to investigate and study every actualexample of morphology and syntax, determine and induce them withthe same semantic and syntactic characters, and count the examplesand types in detail. In this book, there are some terms reflectinghis grammar senses: terms like Moumouming (某某名),Yuci (语词)shows his understanding about parts of speech, terms like Chongyan(重言),Danyan (单言) and Dieyun (叠韵) shows his understandingabout ways of word-formation, terms like Wen Tong Yili (文同一例)and Jufa Xiangtong (句法相同) shows his understanding about syntax.It is of big theory significance and academic value to dig thegrammar senses of his book roundly and systematically that we canenrich the materials of Chinese history of linguistics on grammar,and deeply show the contribution of Yu Yue on this subject.
