V. S. Naipaul is a famous contemporary British novelist with a livingbackground as a double immigrant. Affected by both Western and Indian cultures, hisnovels have the unique cultural value. He was awarded the2001Nobel Prize inLiterature by the Nobel Committee. There is no writer resembles him in enjoying thehighest honor but being criticized at the same time. The western world praises himmore for the unique interpretation of the chaos in the third world while the thirdworld criticizes him as “the contemptible slave of Neo-colonialism”. The subject ofcriticism and the focus of dispute are unfolded from the political perspective and onthe political nature. Facing these criticisms and debates, V.S.Naipaul consistentlyrefuses any political counterclaims and never bows to any mainstream politicaldiscourses. The author of this paper believes that the political interpretations areadmittedly necessary and important in a special political history. However, literatureis ultimately literary. When regarding the literary works as an ideology, we shouldmore or less take its aesthetic implication into consideration. It seems necessary toappreciate and criticize those poetic writers and their works with a poetic andaesthetic mind, especially for writers like V.S.Naipaul with a special status as animmigrant in a particular political situation.
