The two poetry anthologies Gushigui and Gushijing are the representatives of theanthology in Ming Dynasty, and also serve as the physical proof of the developmentof poetic theory in late Ming Dynasty. Jingling School strives for the balance betweenthe trend of back-to-the-ancient pushed by Qizi School and the spirit praised byGong’an School. Shiyong Lu inherits the style of Jingling School but also surpassesthe previous achievements. They two take “sentiment” as the core and promote thepoetic’s development in late Ming Dynasty. This paper compares the two anthologies, namely Gushigui and Gushijing, fromvarious aspects. In view of the aim of poem selection and the following editingprocess, the poems collected by Gushigui are beyond the traditional principles ofanthology selection and often break the specified model of addition and deletion; forinstance, Yilin is included in Gushigui anthology. By contrast, Gushijing sticks to thetraditional habit of poem selection and has stronger consciousness of model thanGushigui does. From the angle of literary criticism and art appreciation, both ofGushigui and Gushijing agree that “real feelings” is the core of poetry. In comparison,Zhong and Tan pay more attention on consciousness and judge poems from “spirit anddignity” while Shiyong Lu prefers to put aesthetic implication and artistic conceptionin the first priority. The two anthologies are guided by their respective poetry views interms of attitude and comment on the poems in Han Dynasty. Gushigui’s attitudetowards Han poems can be summarized as the following two points. The one is thatpoets in Han Dynasty do not pursue elegance and grace and their poems are easy torecognize but hard to learn. The other is that Gushigui dares to include Jiaosige inHan Dynasty and Yilin in the anthology and becomes the pioneer at that time.Meanwhile, the comments of Gushijing on poems in Han Dynasty consist of threeparts. Firstly, Shiyong Lu considers that Han poems naturally and deeply expresspeople’s feeling and emotion, which is exceptionally outstanding. The poetry in HanDynasty is better than that in Jin and Tang Dynasty overall. Secondly, the poets inHan Dynasty are good at creating atmosphere, which is the most outstanding featurein writing techniques of Han poetry. Thirdly, the five-character quatrain derives fromHan poetry in Shiyong Lu’s opinion. Zhong, Tan and Lu complete the complicated transformation from pursuit ofnatural disposition and intelligence to romantic charm in the poetics system focusedon feeling, which is an indispensable part in the development of classical literature theory.Gushigui and Gushijing reflect the acceptance of Han poetry in late Ming Dynasty.Gushigui changes the rigid manner of ideological trend of back-to-the-ancient whichonly explores the techniques and forms of the poetry in Han Dynasty, and also laysthe emphasis of poetic theory back on poetry spirit and connotation of the Han poetry. After that, Gushijing makes up for the shortage of model spirit and ignorance ofartistic expression in Gushigui. The two anthologies embody different poeticviewpoints and also provide new perspective for the research on Han poetry.
