The Country of the Pointed Firs, the master piece of Sarah OrneJewett, one of the famous Local Colorists in American literature in latenineteenth century, arouses great interest of the reader through theexquisite description of the dignity and adamancy of the women figureswho live under adversity. The endeavor of the book is to deconstructanthropocentrism and androcentrism so as to build a Utopia withecological consciousness of the harmonious relationship between manand nature, man and man, as well as man and himself. This bookrepresents the highest literary achievement of the author.This paper attempts to interpret the novel from the perspective ofecofeminism emerged in1970s, which is an integrated literary theory thatcombines feminist concerns with ecological issues. Through the analysisof women characters with strong personalities and new type ofrelationship between women and men, man and nature and man andhim/herself, it intends to demonstrate Jewett’s early ecofeminist ideas andto reveals Jewett’s condemnation of man’s dominance over women andnature in the patriarchal society, as well as her deep concern for women’sand nature’s destiny.
