Nominalization is a kind of language phenomenon, whose sourcein English could be verbs and adjectives. After reviewing the previousstudies in different linguistic schools, this paper tries to give a brief studyof nominalization from the cognitive grammar, specifically speaking, from the grammatical metonymy. Metonymy consists of high-levelmetonymy and low-level metonymy, and high-level affects the structureof sentence, as a consequence, this paper also attempts to explore theinteraction between nominalization process and the linguistic structure. Itfocuses on four topics:(1) the review of previous studies from differentlinguistic theories, including their advantages and disadvantages;(2)some basic information about grammatical metonymy;(3) the core ofnominalization. Based on the working process put forward in terms of theverbal nominalization, it is my aim to test whether adjectivenominalization is fit to it; and (4) the classification of Englishnominalization and the analysis of English nominalization from thestandpoint of grammatical metonymy. Previous studies focused on theverbal nominalization, such as Wang Jing (2012), so it is a new start toconsider the nominalization from verb and adjective. As is mentioned above, until recent there seems to have severalstudies on nominalization, but some limitations exist as well: firstly theform and the function of nominalization on the surface representation areoverstressed; secondly, some cognitive linguists have recognized themetonymic nature of nominalization, but the metonymic operationsprocess underlying nominalization has not been given sufficient attention;thirdly, the limited studies on the metonymic motivation ofnominalization have not give enough concern to the interaction between nominalization process and the linguistic structure. This paper, based on the nominalization of English verbs, hasexplored the nominalization from grammatical metonymy perspective, and has provided a new explanation to nominalization.
