Light verbs refer to those that convey less content meaning and need to combine with other expressions when used as predicates. In English, the combination of a light verb and a noun is the most frequently used light verb construction, for example “have a N(v)” and “take a N(v)”.Such structures have been a hot research focus in the field of linguistics.Previous studies have described their syntax, semantics and stylistic features etc.from different perspectives, however, more theoretical tools are needed to interpret the phenomenon that the nouns in these structures are converted by verbs.Taking “have a N(v)” as its research object, this thesis aims to explore the constraints of V-to-N conversion in this structure from the perspective of “Profile-Base” theory of Cognitive Linguistic. The analysis tool of this thesis is “Profile-Base” theory. In this theory, the “Profile-Base” of a noun is its profile on a region in some domain and that of a verb is its profile on the processual relationship of component states extended through conceived time. The relationship between verb-converted noun and its verb is very close. They have the same base, that is,the same conceptual content, but they impose different profiles on it.Therefore,to find out the constraints of V-to-N conversion in “have a N(v)”,only pre-converted verbs,or the entered verbs, are needed to be analyzed. The linguistic data of this thesis are collected from BNC.Totally 4503 samples meeting the criteria of the research objects are selected. They are classified into 8 categories according to the semantic features of the pre-converted verbs of “N(v)”.In terms of data analysis, the syntactic and semantic features of “have a N(v)” are described and analyzed so as to derive the syntactic and semantic features of the entered verbs. Then, with Langacker's “Profile-Base Theory”,the entered verbs are described and analyzed to reveal their “Profile-Base” characteristics.Lastly, based on the analysis above, the nominalization constraints for “have a N(v)” are proposed. The research results show that there are two constraints concerning the nominalization process in “have a N(v)”,namely the time profile and the homogeneity of the component state. The reason why the first constraint exists is that, according to “Profile-Base” Theory, the region boundary of a countable noun in its primary cognitive domain corresponds to the boundary of perfective verb in its time cognitive domain. The second constraint exists because the homogeneity of component state provides the precondition for partial semantic replacing the whole semantic, which helps the “subjective small quantity” be realized in the expression of “have a N(v)”.In terms of research significance, this thesis provides a theoretic interpretation for the treatment of the nominalization phenomenon in “have a N(v)” from a perspective of Cognitive Linguistic, and offers a reference concerning theoretic framework and research design. The research findings,as well as data analysis, are of reference value to the teaching, testing and lexicography of English light verb constructions.
