Note taking is one of most established cognitive strategies, which isan effective tool that is used both in daily life and in many professions.There are lots of previous studies proving that note taking strategyimproves students’ learning outcomes. Based on the previous theories,this thesis is written with the purpose of testifying the feasibility andeffectiveness of note-taking strategy training in CET-4passage listening.The experiment lasted for12weeks from October,2013toDecember,2013. The participants were103sophomores majoring inFinancial Management in Xi’an International University. They wererandomly divided into Experimental Class (EC) and Control Class (CC).The listening treatment in EC focused on the integration of thenote-taking strategy training into passage listening. The CC was notprovided with any note-taking strategy training. Pre-test and post-test areapplied in this experiment. The data collected from the study is analyzedthrough means and Independent Samples T test. The major findings are asfollows:It is feasible and effective to apply note-taking strategy training inCET-4passage listening. After a period of training, EC studentsoutperformed over CC students in both global questions and detailedquestions.The study has positive implications in college listening teaching.Note-taking strategy should be taken as an essential part in listeningteaching. Since in China, from primary school to university, students areseldom provided with the training of note-taking in English, collegeEnglish teachers should help their students master note-taking strategy inorder to help students improve their listening comprehension.
