In recent years, the publicity of hotels closely combines with the Internet. Bilingualconstruction of the hotel website is increasingly hot among hotels. Meanwhile, moreresearchers start to pay attention to the study of the C-E translation of hotel profiles. This thesis adopts the genre theory, a new perspective, to conduct a systematicresearch on the C-E translation of hotel profiles. Genre theory, after more than thirtyyears’ development, is now a mature theory which offers a scientific generic analysismethod. It focuses on the realization of communicative intentions, which is of greatguiding significance to the translation of hotel profiles, a member of the pragmatic texts. All together90five-star hotel profiles are collected, including30American hotelprofiles,30Chinese hotel profiles and their corresponded translated English versions. After the generic analysis of the American hotel profiles and the Chinese hotel profiles, itis found that though sharing similar generic structure and communicative purposes, theydiffer in specific move-step structure and linguistic features. The Chinese hotel profilestend to emphasize the “Honor” Step and frequently use florid four-character words. Incontrast, the American hotel profiles adopt concise short sentences and variousexpressional means. Besides, they frequently use imperative sentences, first personalperspective and second personal perspective. On the basis of the analysis, the author points out specific translation problems whichviolate the generic convention, including inappropriate distribution of moves and steps, ignorance of sequence of specific moves and steps, ignorance of English spelling andgrammatical rules and negligence of the idiomatic expressions. In the end, four translationstrategies are offered, namely generalization and omission, specification, reconstructionand shift of perspective. The thesis explores the application of genre theory on pragmatic translation andpromotes the regular development of hotel profile translation and its realization ofcommunicative purposes.
