China began to break through the traditional close-door situation and, gradually,moved to a modernized country since the Opium War due to the influence of theforeign forces. The newspapers and magazines were the most important media forculture propagation and had a far-reaching influence on the development of culture atthat time. The music culture of Modern China changed a lot at the same time. Newknowledge and thinking of the music spread widely through the powerful newspapersand magazines, recording the changes and development of modern Chinese musicculture faithfully.The Eastern Miscellany,lasted nearly45years, is not only thelongest but also the most profound one of the journal in the history of the modernChinese newspapers and magazines, and there are many literatures related to music inthe magazine. Based on the historical materialism, the historical materials of musicfrom The Eastern Miscellany magazine had been classified and studied, by combiningliterature analysis methods of history and integrated discipline theories. The thesis isdivided into three parts: the first part is a general an overview of the The EasternMiscellany and the historical materials of music within the magazine; the materialswere further grouped into three sections, namely "translation and dissemination ofwestern music","China traditional music research" and " The research and debate ofChina modern music development ", and then, were reviewed, respectively, in thesecond part of the thesis; the final part is the conclusion, the characteristics of musichistorical data of the magazine and its influence on the culture of China modern musichad been summarized.
