As a-two-way interaction of messages transmission, classroom teaching doesimpact and promote the teacher and students relationship in forms of informationtransmission. Actually, with both verbal and nonverbal behaviors teachers and studentsconvey messages. However, a large number of English teachers focus on the variouskinds of verbal communication and usually ignore the nonverbal form inteacher-and-student communication. According to Cooper(1988), nonverbalcommunication is very important for teachers while teaching. In this sense theteacher’s proper nonverbal communication plays a crucial role in the successfulteaching. In recent years researchers at home and abroad have conducted numerousstudies in this field though, there are few related researches adopted by qualitativeanalysis and quantitative analysis on nonverbal communication of excellent collegeEnglish teachers in listening and speaking class. This study is expected to provideilluminations to other teachers in college English listening and speaking teaching sothat they can attach great importance to the use of nonverbal communication. Inaddition, the study of excellent teachers’ nonverbal communication hopefully, as agood example, offers its instructiveness to other teachers in English teaching ofcollege listening and speaking.Based on the theory of nonverbal communication, this study collects data throughclassroom observation. First of all, by observing the videos, the case study recordedclassroom nonverbal behaviors of the three subjects, the first and second prize winnersin the2nd National College English Teaching Contest held by Shanghai ForeignLanguage Education Press. On recording nonverbal behaviors of the subjects, thestudents’ reactions, teaching effect and the frequencies of nonverbal behaviors of thethree teachers in English speaking and listening class were also observed and recorded.Finally, the vertical and horizontal comparisons of three teachers’ nonverbal behaviors,as well as detailed analysis to the related data are offered in the thesis.Based on the data collected through video observation, by adopting qualitativeanalysis and quantitative analysis, this study collects, classifies, compares andanalyzes the relevant data from the videos of classroom teaching of three teachers.Through the classification, comparison and analysis of the collected data, themajor findings are as follows:1) Three excellent teachers are good at applying positive nonverbal behaviors in college English listening and speaking class, and improving students’ development ofcognitive abilities with their positive nonverbal behaviors. Teachers’ nonverbalcommunication can benefit information transmission and class management.2) Effective nonverbal communication makes contribution to the betterrelationship between teachers and students. The use of positive nonverbalcommunication helps to create a sound classroom atmosphere. The nonverbalcommunication between teachers and students can encourage students’ participation,and improve the development of students’ cognitive abilities.In this paper, the research on the nonverbal communication of three excellentEnglish teachers in college English listening and speaking class intends to serve as areference and guidance to other college English teachers.
