Literary ideas and artistic styles of a literary work are conveyed not only by thecontent, but also by the words and their presentation the author chooses. Diary fictionis a typical case in point. It differs from traditional fictions in the form of a diary.With the first person as its narrator, it lays emphasis on self expression. Therefore, itcan help reflect the complicated feelings of characters in a more direct manner and offernovelists better opportunity of expressing their thoughts with great clarity.In order to help target readers have a better understanding of the source text, i.e. theliterary work, and of the author’s thought, translators must try to reproduce the style ofthe source text, which is achieved by means of words, rhetorical devices, images, etc.Based on Nord’s functional typology and its corresponding translation strategies as wellas the general characteristics of diary fictions, this paper conducts a study on the E-Ctranslation of The Dairy of a Good Neighbour in terms of words, short sentences,incomplete sentences, rearrangement of sentence order, etc. so as to depict the heroin’slife struggle and inner changes more vividly in the target text. In so doing, it mayfurther lead target readers to meditate on the profound themes of the novel. Moreover,this paper summarizes several practical translation methods, in hope of providing certainreference to E-C diary fiction translation.
