In an era as it is now when seeing is everything, with the transition from elite art topublic art, painting has become a domain where symbols dominate. It’s language isestablished and developed largely around social environment, cultural structure and publicaesthetics. Symbolism of objects and skills in painting, a contribution to Chinesecontemporary art as it is, has also brought up problems. One of the problems is that moreand more artists fail to recognize the unity of what symbols mean and what symbols couldmean because these artists pay little attention to what is behind the symbols. The reasonpeople create artworks is deeply rooted in the desire to express a certain emotionspontaneously. Artworks should basically be the incarnation of this emotion andsupposedly be more. This article, from a symbolic angle, with the help of aninterdisciplinary knowledge in communication, phenomenon and aesthetics, sets toexamine some of the sample works in Chinese contemporary art to categorize symbolsbased on how they are used in terms of language and analyze the phenomenon insymbolism, to further discuss how symbols should be treated and used in a right way toform an independent artistic appearance for any individual in this field.
