The book Adult Development by Susan Krauss Whitebourne can be regarded as an encyclopedia on adult development for its value in theory, guidance and application. It introduces the research methodology and significance of adult development. By summarizing the latest research findings, Susan illustrates the features of development on physiology, sensation, memory, intelligence, personality, family and work during adulthood. The excerpt I translated is the tenth chapter, Parenting. The tenth chapter deals with the relation between parenting and adults’ identity, and the effects of parenting on the marital relation and satisfaction. Several constructive suggestions and advices are provided for a series of problems brought about by children. After searching on the internet, I find that the book has not been translated into Chinese hereto. Academically, the book can usher in a new epoch in research on adult development for it explores the subject in a systematic way compared with previous findings. Socially, the methodologies and solutions offered in Adult Development boast profound meanings in education and application. The book is closely related to reality, and can be used in university classrooms or as a reading material for the mass. The book Adult Development is a psychological collection. Though the diction is normal, it is sometimes very difficult to comprehend the text for it is abundant with long sentences and complicated structures. Thus it is necessary to look up great many parallel texts and psychological dictionaries before translating. Painstaking efforts are taken to comprehend long sentences, and then it is necessary to restructure and reshape them into shorter sentences which are acceptable and readable in Chinese. In addition, literal translation of some seemingly common words turns to be obscure and awkward. Therefore meaning extension is needed to make the translation smooth and complied with the Chinese conventions. In the process of meaning extension, firstly, literal meanings must be considered. Secondly, the norm of meaning extension which is difficult to weigh up also should be taken into account.
