Abstract:China is a civilization with a long history. After thousands of years of evolution, unique national music culture appeared in this piece of fertile land. Because of this unique music culture, the traditional music of China was different from other ethnic groups and outstanding in the world of national music. For Chinese music scholars and creators, the rich national music elements are just like great treasure with inexhaustible nutrients, a little absorption of which would enable the musicians to make achievements on the land of music. After20th century, due to historical reasons, we did a series of studies, researches, and introductions of western music systems on a large scale successively three times. Under the guidance of the elder generation of musicians, the Chinese national music and western music has a large integration. On the one hand, keeping the characteristics and nationality of Chinese national music, On the other hand, learning advanced western composition techniques to enrich the national music creation skills, improving the national music theory systems by taking examples of western advanced systems. Just because of the three important musical exchanges, Chinese national music system became more completed and creating methods were more diversified. These changes not only provided fresh nutrients for the development of Chinese music, but also enabled Chinese national music to go abroad and be known by the world.Based on the "southwest folk color area", this paper tries to take contemporary national music in southwest style and theme as examples to analysis the application of Chinese national music elements in music creation. According to the results of former researchers, the author divides the national music elements into five parts:melody and style, rhythm and speed, structure and harmony, polyphony and orchestrationand, singing and sound. Besides, through the analysis and study of large numbers of famous composers’classics in southwest China, the author sortes and concludes all kinds of commonly used methods of national music elements with explanation. Finally, through the discussion of "Whether it is necessary for Chinese to learn the Chinese national music elements deliberately", the author puts forward some suggestions for the development of Chinese national music. That is we should not only learn Chinese national music elements, but also absorb the beneficial nutrients of western music. In other words, make the past serve the present and the foreign serve China on the premise of keeping national character.
