The Use Of Speech Presentation In E-C Fiction Translation Of Early20^th Century

The thesis investigates the reproduction of Speech Presentation in E-C translation offictions in early20thcentury. By providing a lot of examples, I expound the functions of SpeechPresentation and the features of it in that period.Both society and literature have undergone a revolution in the May4th Movement in early20thcentury. The literary revolutionaries have discarded the style of the traditional literature andtranslated western literary works, attempting to learn the western style, especially in fiction. Atthe same time, dramatic change has been seen in Chinese. However, little attention has been paidto it by researchers, let alone the fine description to the translation in this period. The translationstudy in this period can help us give a better interpretation to the speech presentation andnarration in Chinese thereafter. We can say that Chinese in this period is to be central to ancientChinese and modern Chinese. It has great significance to understand the contemporary Chinesenarration. We know that the Speech Presentation is an important aspect in the study of fictionalstyle. The paper adopts the framework of stylistics to describe the use of Speech Presentation inE-C fiction translation of early20thcentury.In order to conduct the use of Speech Presentation in E-C fiction translation of early20thcentury, the author firstly collects the aligned source literary texts and target literary texts in thatperiod from BFSU CEPC. And then, the author screens and labels the Speech Presentation ofEnglish and Chinese by observation. After the careful analysis, the author gives classificationand elaboration of the functions and reproduction of Speech Presentation.Based on the classification and function of speech presentation given by Geoffery Leechand Mick Short, by studying the translation language in the corpus of the early20thcentury, theauthor has found that in E-C fiction translated texts, the faithful translation is relatively common,but it is undeniable that there are transformations of different modes of Speech Presentationbetween source texts and target texts. In particular, it falls into three categories, the first one isOne-on-One, such as Free Indirect Speech into Indirect Speech; the second one is One-on-Two,like Indirect Speech into a blend of Free Direct Speech and Free Indirect Speech; and the thirdone is One-on-Many, such as the reported clauses in the source texts are transformed into a blendof Free Direct Speech, Free Indirect Speech and the author’s comments. The significance of thestudy is that it lays emphasis on the description of Speech Presentation in E-C fiction translationof early20th century. Such a micro perspective is expected to correct and broaden our currentunderstanding of translation in that period and it is also expected to give some enlightenment totoday’s translation study and translation teaching.
