A Report Of C-E Translation Project Of Software Upgrade Instructions From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the rapid development of science and technology and the fast pace of China’s reform and opening, the technology exchanges between China and foreign countries are becoming more frequent. Relying on its technological strength, China continues exporting software products and services, which generates the demands on the C-E translation of technical materials such as software upgrade instructions.Software upgrade instructions, as a kind of scientific text, play an important role in the export of Chinese technology products and services. Software upgrade instructions have unique characteristics. During the internship, the author undertook the translation project of upgrade instructions in Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. The author selects six software upgrade instructions as the research objects of this report, which are HUAWEI G520-OOOOV100R001C17B203Software Upgrade Instructions, S870e Software Upgrade Instructions, A278t Software Upgrade Instructions, W700Software Upgrade Instructions, UMS Upgrade Instructions and HMS Upgrade Instructions. Based on the C-E translation project of software upgrade instructions of about10,000words, the author employs literature review method and case analysis method to analyze the lexical, syntactic and discourse features of the upgrade instructions. The author establishes three principles of English translation of upgrade instructions from the perspective of Skopos theory, which are accuracy, conciseness and operability. Under the guidance of these principles, the translation will be faithful to the original text in content, brief and concise, as well as reader-friendly. On the basis of the translation principles, the author analyzes the specific translation cases in the upgrade instructions and summarizes the translation strategies for the attributive, sentences without the subject and long sentences. The strategies are as follows:use pre-modifier, prepositional phrase or attributive clause in the translation of the attributive, convert the active voice into passive voice in the translation of sentences without the subject and adopt combination and division strategies in the translation of long sentences.The author hopes that this report based on the practical project will provide reference for others in terms of the stylistic features, C-E translation principles and translation strategies of software upgrade instructions.
