Tess of the d’Urbervilles is the representative work by Thomas Hardy. There have appeared seven Chinese versions of this novel since Zhang Guruo’s version was published by the Commercial Press in1935, among which, Zhang Guoruo’s version and Sun Fali’s version are the most influential, though each of them has its own unique characteristics. A comparative study of different translation versions is very important for us to comprehend the requirements of literary translation. It is different from the general translations, which exerts special demands on translators. In this report, a thorough analysis has been conducted on three translation versions of Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Zhang Guruo, Sun Fali and the reporter in terms of translation methods and techniques, cultural differences and the aesthetics of literary translation. The first chapter is the introduction; the second chapter introduces the purpose, significance and the structure of the project; the third chapter explains the emphasis, difficulty and causes for translating Tess of the d’Urbervilles, concerning translation of regional style, translation of local style, translation of custom image and aesthetics in translation, and the fourth chapter mainly discusses the solutions, mainly translation in custom and culture, translation in natural environment and psychological state, and translation in word features and culture-loaded words. It is expected that suitable methods for literary translation can be developed through the analysis of this report, and in the process the reporter’s ability of translation could be improved.
