| Sergey Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor in the late19th century and early20th century.The Op.39Etudes-Tableaux are one of his representative works during the period of maturity. There are altogether nine pieces which have great abundance of musical vocabulary. The set of piano etudes greatly expands piano’s instrumental performance skills and musical expressiveness. Besides, it possesses rich distinctiveness of musical pictures. Each piece aims at depicting certain scenes or some emotions with supreme artistic values.The paper delves into the artistic orientation and technicality of Rachmaninoff’s Op.39Etudes-Tableaux. The whole paper is divided into three parts. The Introduction part states the development of Etudes before Rachmaninoff, Rachmaninoff’s Etudes-Tableaux and the creation source materials. Besides, this part elaborates on the artistic orientation and technicality of his Op.39Etudes-Tableaux.There are many literatures about Rachmaninoff both at home and abroad with a wide range. However, there is a rarity of systematic literatures about studies on Op.39Etudes-Tableaux at the late period.
