The discovery and narrative of local ethics of zhao Defa is very distinguishableamong contemporary Chinese writers. Apprantly, there are two forms--norm and changein the rural world he described. In his works, Zhao described20th century northern rural society, which hasexperienced great external shock, nevertheless, as he described, the adherent ethicalnorm, thinking mode and pattern of life there has not changed much and theorganization structure, rural order has been reserved. Affected by external shockespecially political and cultural movements, the rural order and ethics has inevitablyexperienced external and internal changes. In the dynamic structure of norm and change, the rural society not only reservestradition, but also breeds new cultural elements. There exists counterbalance andinteration between norm and change, the rural cultural patterns. Therefore, in hisnarrative, he not ony revealed the great change of local ethics, but also found thesolidification of history of it in20th century northern rural area. There is a contradiction in his analysis to the farmers’ spiritual world from theperspective of modern subject consciousness and affection for farmers’culture shownin his folk standpoint narrative, which made it very difficult for him to blend hismodernism in the incidents and images in his works. The dilemma in contemporary folkwriting caused by misplaced cultural position is rather striking.Besides introduction, this thesis discusses the rural ethic narrative of Zhao fromthree perspective.Firstly, the presentation of rural ethic ecology. In rural mundane life, traditionallocal ethics maintains the relationship of person to person, and person to society. Themost important feature of paternal authority-centered family structure is to inherit theconfucian ethics in the concept of child-bearing,and women are sacrifice of traditionalethics. Zhao presented the consistent norm of the family ethics as well as the consistentpoverty of rural areas. In his works, the rural ethic life was governed by severe rules ofliving, the family relations, which should have been harmonious, was destroyed by the cruelty of life. The traditional clansman ethics has been used to regulate local ethicorder and rule the villages. Zhao’s description of local society reveals the secret of theconsistent norms and the hypocrisy enforcement of these normsSecondly, the historical changes of the local ethics.Traditional mode of productionand primitive business mode encountered historical upheaval and political transition, theautarchy maintained by the old feudal thought and value began to collapse, and the localclansman system constructed by the ties of blood and geographical structure began toshake as well. The traditional family ethics, village ethics and political ethics has beentorn and collapsed in the struggle between abandon and reserve, rejection andattachment. In the elegy of the traditional local ethics emerges the prospect ofreconstructed local ethics.Thirdly, folk standpoint and modern horizon in local ethic narrative. Zhao is atypical famer writer for he never cuts the kinship with his hometown, to which he hasdevoted all his emotion. As a native son,he values the sincere local ethics, keepsdistance with the enlighteners, reflects and criticizes various changes of China ruralethics from modern perspective.
