Through a long evolution, ancestors of Northeast China had developed intomany different minorities, one of which was called Sushen in pre-Qin period andlived in the area of eastern Heilongjiang. Sushen minority changed into differentnames in each dynasty. It was named Yilou between Han and Eastern and western jindynasty, Wuji in Northern and southern dynasty, Mohe in Sui and Tang dynasty andfinally developed into Sumomohe and established Balhae.Balhae was a local authority attached to Tang dynasty. It had achievedsignificant communication and development because it was a hub linking Centralplain, Japan and Korea. Therefore, Balhae music was formed and developed Based ongeographical and cultural advantage. It assimilated its surrounding music culture andfurther developed into an important hub in the communication between Tang dynastyand other areas.Based on the style of Mohe Minority music and by absorbing and fusing themusic in Central plain of Tang and its surrounding countries, Balhae music wasformed. There have been fewer studies on Balhae music so far. Therefore, in order todraw people’s attention to study Bahhae music, this study will give a truly objectivepresentation of the formation, communication, development and structure of Balhaemusic by referring to the previous studies, historical records and excavations.Firstly,the study will give a general introduction of Balhae and Balhaeminority and then analyze its origin from geographical and human environment. Next,based on the previous studies and some related historical records, the study will sumup and tease out the music communication between Balhae and its surrounding areassuch as Tang dynasty, Kogoryo and Japan. Finally, the study will classify Balhaemusic according to its horizontal and longitudinal development and culturecommunication.
