Gao’ Yizhi (Alfonso Vagnone,1566-1640), formerly known as Wang Fengsu,style is ZeSheng, also style YiYuan. He was born in Italy and came to China in the33thyear (1605) of Wanli, in the44thyear of Wanli (1616)he was persecuted Nanjingmissionary cultivates. Then he lived in Macao for8years and went back to themainland of China in the4thyear of Tianqi(1616). Considering his safety, he changedhis name into Gao Yizhi. Due to his great work in Jiangzhou of Shanxi Province, hewas regarded as the “Establishing Disciple”of Shanxi Catholicism, there he died at the13thyear of Chongzhen(1640).Gao’ Yizhi is one of the representatives among Jesuit missionaries coming toChina. He is well known for his abundant writings. He translates nearly20kinds ofbooks. This paper selects Gao Yizhi’s a series of writings as the study objects includingWestern Learning on Personal Cultivation, Western Learning on Family Managementand Western Learning on Nation Management, shortly speaking his work can bedefined as “Cultivating and Managing Theory”.This paper is divided into three parts. The first chapter introduces Gao Yizhi’s lifeexperience and writings and analysis his experiences influence on the writings. Beforethe Nanjing Church disaster, in the meanwhile he also emphasized on his translation ofboth Chinese and Western books.After his moving to Jiangzhou of Shanxi Province, hecleared up and printed his translations.“Cultivating and Managing Theory” is the lastbig work in his twilight years.Chapter Two summarizes his writing process and content of Western learning onPersonal Cultivation, Western Learning on Family Management and Western Learningon Nation Management, and further discusses the thesis statement of “Cultivating andManaging Theory”.These writing were not finished at the same time by Gao Yizhi,some of them were done in the early period, and were rearranged into his “Cultivatingand Managing Theory”. Therefore,“Cultivating and Managing Theory” is the mostcomplete work of Gao’Yizhi which combines western Catholicism and Confucianethical thoughts. His source texts are from Jesuit learning courses—Western EthicalPhilosophy. The Purpose of his texts was not only advocating Catholicism but alsoserved for Jiangzhou Local education.Chapter three mainly studies the process and characteristics of ethical construction of Catholicism in “Cultivating and Managing Theory”.Culture differences between east and west are fully considered in writing“Cultivating and Managing Theory”.Without violating Catholicism doctrines“Cultivating and Managing Theory” and political ambitions.By the comprehensive theme of western learning introduced into China,“Cultivating and Managing Theory” combines Confucian culture with Catholicismbelief. In his writing process, besides transliteration, the author also adopts classicalstructure and terms of Confucian, argues by the knowledge of western ethicalphilosophy, and thus gives new meaning to original Confucian words. The creatingprocess of “Cultivating and Managing Theory” is also the process of transformingculture. Every Jesuit missionary’s culture transforming makes up of the whole trend ofeastward transmission of western sciences in late Ming dynasty.
