With analysis of some narrative dance works, the description pattern of narrative dance isexplored and the findings are used in the appreciation and teaching of narrative dance. Theresearch aims at providing a theoretical foundation for the creation of narrative dance worksand broadening the vision of narrative dance appreciation and teaching.“Narrative five steps” in NENU and all previous national-range competitive dancesperformance are analyzed with Greimas’ Theory Action, which are divided into three bigcatalogues and eight narrative patterns. By means of these patterns, not only are the potentialrelations among various action elements profoundly analyzed, but also helps to create morefirst-class dance works. There are three parts in the article, which explore three narrative patterns respectivelyand the dance creation and application in teaching. Chapter one focuses on basic linearnarrative structure that one narrative pattern simply transfer to another. The application oflosing-obtaining pattern and obtaining-losing pattern are enumerated in this chapter. The thirdsection in chapter one is about emotional dance that is excluded out of the research because itis improper to put emotional dance into the state transfer group. Chapter two and chapter threehave two kinds of curve narrative patterns, which is on the basis of linear narrative patternsoverlay. Additionally, three narrative patterns to different extent based on “fulfilling goals” arelisted in these two chapters. Chapter four is about how to apply narrative patterns to create, appreciate and teaching dance works, in which two examples,“Scorched Earth” and “ChineseMother” are given. The findings of the research are as follows:First, narrative dance work generally includes two parts which are the desire creating andgoals achieving.Second, the desire creating phrase is similar to competence formalization phrase and thegoal achieving phrase is similar to awarding phrase.Third, goals achieving phrase can be divided into implemented state and unimplementedsate. Narrative dance pattern in this research are classified into two groups, which includethree catalogues and eight parts. Linear narrative group includes losing-obtaining andobtaining-losing parts. Curve narrative group includes six parts as obtaining-relativelosing-obtaining, obtaining-losing-obtaining, losing-further losing-losing,losing-obtaining-losing, losing-relative obtaining-losing, obtaining-furtherobtaining-obtaining, which he former three parts have the positive starts and ends, however, the later three parts have the negative starts and ends. The narrative status is relative, whichmeans that the happy life embodies in the contrast to the unhappy life.
