Contrastive Analysis Of Animal Words Between English And Uighur Proverbs

Proverbs, being pithy, short and vivid, embody profound truth and wisdom. Theyhave been long favored by people. Proverb is not only the crystallization of humanwisdom, but also national cultural heritage.Animal words are popular as the images of animals are very vivid, and significantfor us to express our ideas. Uighur, an official language of the Xinjiang UighurAutonomous Region, is widely used in both social and official spheres.This paper probes into the distribution of animal words in English and Uighurproverbs, similarities and differences of their cultural connotations and their causes.By contrastive analysis on collected linguistic data using mixed method, the paperfocused on ten most popularly used animals. In this paper, the distributions of animalwords in both Uighur and English proverbs are presented; also, connotation analysisof ten animal words in English and Uighur proverbs are stated, followed by theirsimilarities and differences; finally, the possible causes of similarities and differencesof the connotations are concluded.The research could be a great supplement to the studies on Uighur and English;can be applied to Uighur-English or English-Uighur teaching and learning, could beof great help for teachers and students to enlarge their knowledge on Uighur andEnglish proverbs and animal terms; could serve as a reference on English-Uighurproverb or animal words translation, and it is of great importance to avoidmisunderstanding in English-Uighur cross-cultural communication.
