Mr. Ding Zhongyi developed interest in drawing during childhood and started doing so since9. Hiscomic work Team’s Flag got published when he was14. In Chian, He is now a famous Chinese ink paintingartist on figure painting. After graduated from Zhejiang Academy of Art (now China Academy of Art) in1960in Chinese painting major, he since then went to work in Henan province until today. Mr. Ding iscurrently the art college professor of Henan University, graduate student mentor, member of China ArtistsAssociation, former Henan Artists Association Vice President, the Committee member of Henan Literatureand Art Association, current Henan Research Institute of Culture and History member, Henan OutstandingExpert and etc. Mr. Ding participated in National7th,8thChinese Writers and Artists Congress, and6thArtists Congress. Mr. Ding’s works is unique, simple yet with artistic and meaningful prospect. His worksdemonstrate the essence of Chinese traditional shui-mo figure painting using sketch technique of lights&shadows. His work shows the exquisite quintessence of figure painting!Mr. Ding Zhongyi nouveau-method Shui-mo figure painting has generated great influence amongChinese Shui-mo figure painting circles, and his works evolved along with the painters’ circles. Thereforestudying Mr. Ding’s Shui-mo figure paintings not only could help us understand the evolvement anddevelopment, but also could make us understand the importance of sketch technique of lights and shadowson Mr. Ding’s Shui-mo figure painting. It is no doubt studying and researching Mr. Ding’s works is avaluable case study.Mr. Ding Zhongyi’s deep and thorough exploration has promoted the development and innovation ofShui-mo figure painting. The Shui-mo figure painting’s development is diversified in multiple directions,yet it is has been raised that some wish to revert Shui-mo figure painting to old days; however this is notpractical to realistic figure painting. This paper1stinduced and summarized Mr. Ding’s Shui-mo figurepainting course of development, characteristics and causes, and it’d concluded that the sketch technique oflights and shadows has affected Mr. Ding’s paintings.It is also mentioned in the article is his concepts, observation methods,“line” abstraction, panel tempo,and influence on painting style, in order to prove the points-influence of lights and shadows sketch technique on paintings. Next, Mr. Ding’s works is compared with Mr. Jiang Zhaohe, Yang Zhiguang, FangZengxian, and Liu Wenxi, the difference and similarities are provided for analysis, from which we canconclude Mr. Ding Zhongyi’s significant influence and symbolic meaning on Chinese shui-mo figurepainting.This paper shall provide conclusion on Mr. Ding’s breakthroughs creations of interpreting westernsketch technique into Chinese shui-mo figure painting, to prove the importance of using such sketchtechnique of lights and shadows on shui-mo figure painting, and therefor opened door for consideration andreference for shui-mo figure painting development.
