Tributary Ralationship And Literary Communication: Research On The Ralationship Between Vietnamese Envoy To China In Qing Dynasty And Guangxi

Vietnam, named Jiao Chi in ancient times, has countless ties with China sinceantiquity. Since Ch’in Shih Huang-ti established Jiao Chi Prefecture, Vietnam began thehistory of using Chinese characters. It lasted more than one thousand years that Jiao Chiwas subordinate to Chinese feudal dynasty as a province. During Song Dynasty, Dinh BoLinh, a Vietnamese, suppressed the insurrection of12warlords, established Dai Co Viet.Vietnam began its independent feudal dynasty. Later on, Dinh Bo Linh asked SongDynasty to give him an official post. Tai-stu of Song Dynasty, Zhao Kuangyin conferredhim as King of Jiao Chi, which meant that tributary relationship between China andVietnam began and lasted near one thousand years. The tributary relationship betweenChina and Vietnam gradually declined in Qing Dynasty, and ended in1885. Under thetributary system, Vietnam, as a tributary state of China, had to pay tribute to China.Diplomatic activities between two countries are reflected in envoys exchanging.Obviously, feudal government of Vietnam paid special attention to choosing the envoysto China. Most Vietnamese envoys to China had a good knowledge of Chinese cultureand ability of writing poetry and prose in Chinese. During the time in China as an envoy,they wrote many literary works, which supplies cogent historical data for researches ontributary relationship between China and Vietnam. Guangxi, as a province of Chinabordered on Vietnam, was the only way which Vietnamese envoys must pass whencame to China. This paper takes the tributary relationship and literary communication asclue, tries to ravel out the tributary relationship between China and Vietnam in QingDynasty, finds out the connection between Vietnamese envoys to China and Guangxi inQing Dynasty, as well as the poetic prose they wrote when they passed Guangxi,discusses their journey in Guangxi, intoning the scenery of Guangxi, as well as theirexchanging with the native literati of Guangxi and so on, learn the inner link betweenVietnam and Guangxi in terms of history, promotes bilateral connection anddevelopment under new environment.
