A Supplement And Correction To Ruanyuan’s Collating Notes Of The Pangeng Of Shangshu With Commentaries And Subcommentaries

The object of this thesis is Pangeng and its commentaries and subcommentaries(《盘庚注疏》)Pangeng is an important piece of Shangshu and was written down at a quite early time. By collating the important editions of Pangeng and absorbing the collating achievements of our predecessors, this thesis is aimed at supplementing and correcting Ruanyuan’s collating notes of Pangeng.Shangshu with commentaries and subcommentaries as an important part of the Confucian classics, it has developed an extremely complicated edition system. Scholars in the past have realized this issue at a very early time and some of them paid great attention to the collations of the text of the Classics. The textual collation of the most large scale in history was the one led by Ruanyuan during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty. They compiled a book, which was highly regarded by subsequent scholars, called the Notes of Textual Collation of the Thirteen Confucian Classics with Commentaries and Subcommentaries(《十三经注疏校勘记》)After that, Ruanyuan organized the block-printing of the Thirteen Classics. They chose and rewrote some important ones of the collating notes and put them at the end of every volume. Thus there exist two different editions of the collating notes. This thesis intensively analyses the difference between them.The main part of this thesis is the supplementation and correction to the collating notes of Ruanyuan. Because of the subjective and objective restrictions at that time, there existed great deficiencies in the collating notes of Ruanyuan. One of the main deficiencies is that the editions collated by Ruanyuan are not comprehensive, especially the lack of main editions of Song Dynasty. Today much more valuable editions are available to us. By collating the main editions of Pangeng, the information of each edition is completely collected. Also,by the thorough absorption of the achievements of our predecessors, it is possible for us nowadays to surpass Ruanyuan. This thesis is aimed at solving some of the issues existing in the text of Pangeng and analyzing the relation of some different editions.
