American sinologist Patrick Hanan is a master of Chinese novels studies, Hananis a great maser that can be counted in American sinologists. Because his studiesstarted from the1960s, so although his work and ideas have been o f considerableacademic attention, but special studies for him is still rather rare, and the studies arenot thorough and comprehensive. Therefore, this article will take all Hanan’smasterpieces and the academic study articles of Hanan’s work as the research object,through the study of its contents and methods, strive to fully demonstrate Hanan’scontribution and innovation of the contents and methods on Chinese novel study. Onthe whole, it can be divided into following parts:Exordium, A brief introduction of Chinese classical novels studies in American,the academic background of Hanan, as well as the current situation of Chineseeducational circles on Hanan research and research ideas in this article.Chapter1,Hanan’s studies on ancient Chinese vernacular novels. This chapter stresses on theresearch of short ancient Chinese vernacular novels by Hanan,take the time sequencepattern to separately study the early stage, the middle stage and the late stage of shortvernacular novels. Emphasize on discussing the style characteristic of the authors ofeach period and rules of development at all levels in Chinese ancient vernacularnovel。Chapter2, Hanan’s studies on modern Chinese novels. This chapter stresseson the research of Hanan’s Chinese modern novels. This chapter is divided into twosections, to discuss his contribution in the study of modern novels, namely thediscovery and research of "new novel" redefinition and missionary novels. FromHanan’s unique research perspective,discusses his rediscovery of the novels of thelate Qing Dynasty。Chapter3,Hanan’s studies perspective methods of Chinese novels.This chapter is divided into two sections, the first section summarizes the tradition ofHanan’s Chinese research methods; the second one summarizes its innovation,focusing on his use of “narrative analysis" and " style of analysis.” And through hisconcrete research content to verify his research methods,and affirm the feasibility ofhis research methods.
