As a representative movie of Japanese film master—Akira Kurosawa’s later style,Akira-Kurosawa’s Dreams takes us into his elusive narrative under surrealism from thevery beginning. This thesis will try to capture the director’s deepest pain and longingthrough the elusive image and make it the axis of analyzing his other works. This thesis starts with the Psychoanalysis to explore the metaphor and the intention ofAkira-Kurosawa’s Dreams while seeking the prototype and token of image. The next stepis to find the subtle clues that advance the impetus narrative in the structure based ondetailed analysis of the film text. Eventually, this thesis takes a vertical discussion bycomparing the intrinsic metaphor and the plot connection of Kurosawa’s works of differentstages, forming a new explanation of his work.By the virtue of Lacan’s theory, this thesis affirms that every narrative subject isinterrogated by the Big Other, and emphasizes the metaphor (or metonymy) effect of thesignifier in the symbolic process. In order to express respect to the movieAkira-Kurosawa’s Dreams, the author reverses Lacan’s ternaire genesis logic of “imaginaryregister”,“symbolic register” and “real register”. After analyzing several typical symptoms, the thesis concludes three feasible entry points: the healing interaction, the symbol to deathas well as the mistake and externalization of mirror image.
