Glass in the Chinese and foreign art history has been as its transparency, often overlooked but full of mystery. From thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt and China during the late Spring and Autumn Period was used as the royal ornaments, to the medieval church inlaid rose window, then to the era of magnificent Art Nouveau glass vases, lamps, glass has been writing its long and full of charming art journey. In this long road, craftsmen, artists and later designers is an indispensable protagonist, they keep on interpreting new material properties of glass, creating new processing methods and incorporate artistic imagination, make glass art works show the typical decorative style. Different eras, different ethnic and the internal factors of artists’ aesthetic ideal, personality and temperament, etc., making glass art decorative style in different countries have different distinction, this paper is based on a review of the development process of glass art and interpretation of contemporary Chinese and foreign representative of glass artists, attempts to compare the similarities and differences of contemporary Chinese and foreign glass art decorative style.The main body of this paper is divided into four parts. The first part, first defined to glass art, and point out this paper is mainly study the narrow glass art, glass art works, then explained the meaning of decoration and style, finally introduce the processing technology of glass art and what kind of decorative style they produced; the second part makes a brief review and summary to the development process of Chinese and foreign glass art, take the representative selection of glass art decorative style to interpret, Chinese glass art from the beginning of the compound eye beads and glass bi of Spring and Autumn Period, through " imitation jade " period of the Han Dynasty, the art glass of the Tang and Song Dynasties, to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty reached the golden age, foreign glass art style is various, ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, Persia Sassanian dynasty have had a brilliant glass art, medieval stained-glass windows, glass art of Venice Murano, deep engraved glass of Czech Bohemia, Art Nouveau era, has left many amazing artistic masterpieces; the third part focuses on analysis and comparative study of contemporary Chinese and foreign glass artists and their works, first clear define the contemporary glass art, take the rise of The Glass Studio Movement in the1960s as a watershed, then analysis and comparison the area of contemporary glass art decoration style, this paper discusses the main area of East Asia, North America, Western Europe, Central Europe, Nordic, etc., through the analysis of the regional, national character, combined with aesthetic concepts in depth, finally make a systematic comparative study on the contemporary Chinese and foreign glass art decorative style, mainly involves the shape, color, space, light and shade, texture, etc., and use of Materials science, Semantics, Aesthetics, and other multidisciplinary blend of methods study compared the similarities and differences; the fourth part interpret crossover of contemporary glass art and makes a prospect of its development and future.
