This paper is supposed to discuss the images of avenger in Chinese modern literature, on the aspect of nihilism. The nihilism here means deposing of the highest value and dream, means a kind of loss of meaning as well as the collapse of the ultimate meaning of the world and life by individual. The avenger we discussed this paper, were always influenced by nihilism in two ways. Some avengers become decadence because they couldn’t settling themselves down after avenge. The essence of this sense of vacancy and decadence is nihilism, which roots from individual will, makes heart’s homelessness after avenge become normality. The others are targeted by avenging sword, which eventually leads to self-destruction. They construct existence with nonexistence, make destruction as construction, which is another form of nihilism. We attempt to give a comprehensive review on the images of avenger in Chinese modem literature, and describe the connection between nihilism and images of avenger.Based on the discussion, the question will be elaborated in three chapters. Firstly, we mainly focused on the connection between nihilism and images of avenger. The influence of nihilism to modem literature is sometimes concealed, and always overshadowed by enlightenment discourse and evolution discourse, however, the windy avengers in modem authors’ writings is the most flashing images under the nihilism’s effects of estrualization. Thereby, arguing the connection between nihilism and images of avenger and researching the cultural context characteristics of the images of avenger can never be ignored when we understanding the images of avenger in Chinese modem literature. The second chapter will discuss the types of avenger and explored the differences. The first difference is the drown of self-cheating—from avenging nihility to self-destruction. The second is chasing for self-existence—from the nihility of oneself to the regression of subjectivity. The third difference is the committing suicide from the torchbearer of hope to fallacious avenger. The last part in this chapter is supposed to discuss the differences between the images under the influence of nihilism and those without this influence. The last chapter of this paper is supposed to argue the images of windy avenger and narrative strategy of modem writers. It’s supposed to elaborated on two aspects:modem, avenge, nihility—triple circulation structure, and vacancy and absurdity—a new narrative strategy.
