Attempts are made in this MTI translation report to analyze how to adopt strategies of semantic extension and explication to deal with problems of semantic traps in translation based on the E-C translation of Chapter11and appendix of Adult Development. This book is a psychological collection, written by Susan Krauss Whitbourne who is a contemporary distinguished professor of psychology in America. This book gives an integrative view of adult development from perspectives of physiology, cognition, personality, family relationships and work. Chapter11introduces the importance of work to the adult, the effects of work on adult’s intelligence and personality, several theories about vocational choice and development, as well as the relationships between work and family in adulthood. The appendix covers several developmental research strategies in the field of developmental psychology. In light of the non-equivalent expressions between Chinese and English, literal translation in accordance with dictionary definitions may sometimes result in an unreadable text for target readers. Hence based on the case studies from the translation of Chapter11and appendix of Adult Development, this MTI report argues that a translator should take reader’s response in mind and adopt such strategies as semantic extension and explication in dealing with semantic problems so as to represent the intended meaning of the original as much as possible.
