Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) is a famous Polish composer and pianist of the Romantic Period, his Polonaise-Fantaisie in Ab major (Op.61,1846) is one of the most important compositions in his late period. This article is to analyze the style characteristics and the composing skills of this composition, and to discover its unique artistic value.This paper is divided into four parts:1. Introduction. Introducing the research situation of this thesis, the important literatures at home and abroad as well as the general situation of Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantaisie. Presenting the history of the genre which is named Polonaise, briefly reviewing Chopin’s composing process of Polonaise, and pointing out their characteristics and their influences on Polonaise-Fantaisie in Ab major.2. The style characteristic of Polonaise-Fantaisie in Ab major. On the one hand, I will state late period style of this composition from the perspective of emotion and skills by presenting a few scholars’ achievement of Chopin’s late period style; on the other hand, I want to illustrate the relationship between this two types of genre and its influence on form by analyzing the unique integration phenomenon of this composition.3. The composing skills of Polonaise-Fantaisie in Ab major. Pointing the form of this composition which is not only based on the Ternary Form, but of the characteristics of Variation Form and Sonata Form; each themes of the middle part is derived from a single theme which is the basis of themes, then it sublimated in the character variations; the tonality is of Romanticism features, it made extensive use of the alternation of major and minor keys, the switch of equal-chords and altered chords.4. Conclusion. Summing up the viewpoints in this thesis and making a plan for the further study.
