Experimental Acoustic Validation On Ambiguity Solution In Korean Ambiguous Sentences

Ambiguity can be seen at times in the usage of korean language and characters in language life as well as other nations’．Ambiguity i‘’s a common language phenomenon in natural languages．Ambiguity refersthat the same surface structure corresponds to two or more kinds of deeper meanings. I look into ambiguity to understand the accurate meaning of ambiguous sentences，to remove the ambiguity and help the people learning Korean. From the speaker’s point of view, the thesis investigates the prosodic expression when the ambiguity in the ambiguoussentences are removed, using the methods of experimental phonetics．The speaker selects a coordinating phrase“(?)”and a typical ambiguous phrase“(?)”with a key word “(?)”means“younger brother and elder brother’s son”，“younger bro七her and elderbrother’s sons”in language life. The speaker asked10native Korean students studying in Yanbian University to read the ambiguous phrases and three sentences expanded by the phrases．Then analyze the ambiguous prosodic features in the different situation and analyze and explain them, using phonetics theory.Study found：1．It is evident that pause plays an important part in removing ambiguity, but is can’t account that pause necessarily appear after the prosodic boundaries．2. With the different aim point of removing ambiguity, the pitchof the conjuctive word“(?)”is raised, playing the part of removing ambiguity. Namely, it emphasize coordinating relation by raising pitch．When it emphasizes modifying relation，the pitch of the preposition“(?)”is raised.3. Different choice of semantics makes the syllables duration of the conjuctive words“(?)”and the preposition “(?)” is lengthened. It is more effective to remove ambiguity. Namely, When coordinating relation is emphasized syllable duration of the conjuctive words “(?)” is lengthened relatively. When the modifying relationis emphasized, syllable duration of “(?)” is lengthened.The above three results of the research shows clearly by the experemental data that the conjuctive words “(?)” andthe preposition “(?)” to express prosodic boundary is lengthened relatively, playing the most important part in removing ambiguity．...
