David Herbert Lawrence (11September1885-2March1930) is considered tobe one of the most controversial British novelists of the20thcentury. Sons and Loversis one of the great works of him, which has aroused many scholars’ interest since1960s. The author displays tactful mimetic device of dialects in this novel, and ithelps to build up a fictional world which is the real human society in miniaturelinguistically and socially.In China, scholars are interested in the rhetorical device and the theme in Sonsand Lovers. At abroad, since1970s, attentions have been paid to the criticism of theprototype and the analysis of language in Sons and Lovers.With the application of code-switching and Markedness Model theory, this papercombines theoretical analysis and exemplification elaboration to study thecode-switching in Sons and Lovers.There are two languages-Standard English and dialect-co-existing in the novelnaturally and harmoniously. With the application of code-switching theory andMarkedness Model, the author analyzes the code-switching in Sons and Lovers. Thispaper studies the types of code-switching in the novel. It distinguishes the linguisticfeatures between Standard English and dialects from the phonetic level, lexical leveland syntactical level in order to lay the theoretical foundation for further research.Then based on the Markedness Model, the author studies the motivation for theMorels to switch codes. With regards to the above findings, the paper further analyzesand interprets the thoughts of Lawrence.This thesis aims to apply the theory of code-switching into language analysis ofSons and Lovers, with the expectation of providing a new sociolinguistic perspectiveto literary appreciation.
