A Study Of Code-switching In Sons And Lovers From The Perspective Of Register

As a product of language contact,code-switching simply means the alternations of two or more linguistic varieties occurred in the same conversation.Code-switching is a kind of language variety and language variety is a topic which can be discussed under register theory.As a common research field between systemic-functional linguistics and sociolinguistics,register theory points out a new direction for code-switching study.Code-switching not only occurs in real life but also frequently occurs in some literary works.Sons and Lovers is one of the great works of David Herbert Lawrence,which has aroused many scholars' interest since 1960 s.In China,scholars mostly paid interests to the theme and the rhetorical device in Sons and Lovers.At abroad,scholars paid attentions to the criticism of the analysis and the prototype of language in Sons and Lovers since 1970 s.There are two research purposes of this study.On one hand,this study intends to reveal the distribution of code-switching in Sons and Lovers and develop a better understanding of this unique language phenomenon in this great work.On the other hand,this tentative study is hoped to testify the applicability and feasibility of register model as a theoretical framework in the research of code-switching in literary works.This thesis aims to adopt the register theory to analyze code-switching in Sons and Lovers,and quantitative and qualitative methods are both used in this thesis.The core of this study is to find out if there is any relationship between the influence of field,tenor and mode and the frequency of code-switching in Sons and Lovers.In general,the present study focuses on three aspects:(1)The distribution of the code-switching in Sons and Lovers;(2)The register analysis of the code-switching in Sons and Lovers;(3)The functions of code-switching in Sons and Lovers.The present study finds that most of the switches are intra-sentential code-switching and between-turns code-switching,and inter-sentential code-switching occupies the least proportion.Besides,the intra-sentential code-switching are mainly pronouns.The investigation of code-switching instances shows that the three factors of register,field,tenor and mode have a restrictive effect on the frequency of code-switching according to the distributions of different types of code-switching in Sons and Lovers.What's more,code-switching in this novel has two functions,the social function and the linguistic function.
