Chinese idiom, as a part of the most vivid and concise vocabulary system,isresearched by many scholars as a hot spot issues. But the music-type Chinese idiomrefers to the ones which are in common use while poorly researched. Taking about431Chinese idioms related to music-type selected in eight idiom dictionaries aslinguistic data, with combination of synchronic and diachronic views, the paper willsystematically analyze such idioms from three aspects—traditional linguistics,cultural linguistics, cognitive linguistics.The paper is divided into five integral parts:Introduction section, the premise of thethesis, includes three parts—the reason and significance of the selected topic, thereview of the study, the sources of data and the methods of the study. The second,third and fourth section forms the main body of the paper. The second sectiondiscusses brief account of music-type Chinese idiom. On the basis of the definition ofidiom by linguists, I offer the new views of the nature of idiom, which is not only thefruit of thinking concept, but also the unit of culture cognition. The definition of themusic-type idiom supports the quantitative analysis in the paper. The music-typeidiom includes theory of the music, form of the music, and style of the music and soon. The third section analyses several typical imageries, occurred in the music-typeChinese idioms, contain symbolic meaning by the theory of cultural linguistics. In theview of synchrony, it shows people’s concept of the aesthetic, the judgment of value,spirit pursue, and the social function of music. In the view of diachrony, it exploresidioms have dynamic reaction to material, regulation and spirit cultural history. Thefourth section, researched by cognitive linguistics, is the peculiarity of this paper. Itexplains the theory of cognitive linguistics and its brand—cognitive semantics, and apply metaphor and metonymy, which is the important cognitive model, to thecognitive analyses of the music–type idioms. It analyzes human’s cognitive thoughtpattern simply, making the research of music-type idioms have more different anglesand more value. The last section is the conclusion which conducts a brief summary, aswell as the problems and defects existed in this paper frankly.In short, the in-depth knowledge of Semanteme of the music-type idioms plays asignificant role in vocabulary research, develop and expand culture, Chinese teaching,etc. By means of systematically analyzing and studying such kind of idioms from theaspects of culture and cognition, the author hopes to provide valuable materials forrelated researchers, and make beneficial exploration for current study of vocabulary.
