Tragedy is the highest achievement of Ancient Greek literature, and reflected theclassical humanities consciousness of ancient Greek. The heroes take the attitude of“Being-towards-death” to present self-worth and human’s self-worth. By theconstantly fighting and struggling, humans try to be the owners of their own destiny.Tragedy is still an important part of the city-state life (which is in the sense of“politics” primitive).The tragic hero’s personality growth mirrored the personalitygrowth of the citizens who enjoyed “opera allowance” and sat on a semi-circulartheatre watching tragedy.From a longitudinal dimension, the drama pattern of the tragedy experienced anevolution from “destiny tragedy” to “nature tragedy”. The scenario changed from fateto personal character. The monographer will try to explain the humanitiesconsciousness of Ancient Greek Tragedy in the perspective of Oedipus the King andMedea.In order to carding how view on tragedy developing in more detail.The text ofthe thesis is divided into five parts:The First Chapter: Humanism is the leading feature of Ancient Greek culture.Which will be demonstrated directly by the origin of tragedy,the origin of source andthe designation of theatre.The Second Chapter: In the perspective of Oedipus the King. Which will throughthe religious morality of Sophocles,the tragedy of destiny,and also the innocence ofOedipus to present the Gods and Fate going through the tragedy. Despite the human’smisfortunes are caused by fate, the great of citizen ethics still cannot attribute to fate.The Third Chapter: In the perspective of Medea. Which will through theskepticism of Euripides and the nature tragedy proving personal character (theshadow of citizens).It is the first time that people become the main body in thedevelopment of history. The unfathomable fate or natural existence that oracle implieswill do not attract individual’s all attraction any longer.The Forth Chapter: Conclude the development and evolution between the twotragedies and their author’s story: the declining of Athens Polis and the friendship oftwo authors. The Last Chapter: Through the comparative study of two tragedies, themonographer of this thesis tries to find an entrance of ancient Greek culture from adetail to deepen the understanding of the Greek classical humanism.
