Yu Pingbo (1900-1990), poet, essayist, literature researcher, redologist, KunquOpera researcher, the active responder of the New Culture Movement, one of thefounders of the new redology. The "dream of Red Mansions" research and criticism hasspecial significance in his nearly seventy year academic career. Yu Pingbo is one of theimportant scholars during the May4th period. His "dream of Red Mansions" criticismnot only reflects the development of Redology since five four, but also reflects theachievements of literary theory and literary criticism during the May4th period. So, theresearch on Yu Pingbo’s redology theory should not be limited in the range of Redology,but also on the whole range of literary criticism. This dissertation consists four chapters,will discuss Yu Pingbo’ s "dream of Red Mansions" research and criticism on the rangeof literary criticism.The first chapter is the summary of the Redology and Yu Pingbo’s research.Researchers regard Hu Shi’s "a dream of Red Mansions research" as the boundarybetween the "old redology" and "new redology". The "old redology" containsannotation、comment and poems, embodies the traditional characteristics of Chineseancient literary criticism attention to subjective experience to ignore scientific analysis.The figurist embodied China ancient literati "history of each card" tradition, on the otherhand, they also demonstrated the novel is equivalent to the historical data and draw aforced analogy atmosphere. The "new redology" directed by scientific spirit, and strive toestablish the status of the scientific method in the study of "a dream of Red Mansions”.As one of the founders of the new Redology, Yu Pingbo adheres to equal emphasis onscience and art criticism standard, and unites the textual criticism and novels criticism,and made important achievements in the distinction between the original and the sequel,the judgment of the lost manuscript plot, the collation of version and other aspects of theideological content and artistic works.The second chapter discusses on the criticism of Yu Pingbo‘s "a dream of RedMansions". As the important scholars during the May4th period, Yu Pingbo adheres tothe scientific standards as a guide in literary criticism, to the art of the standard as thecore. So Yu Pingbo’s "dream of Red Mansions" criticism is more academic than the "old redology", and has more artistic sprits than textual research. Because Yu Pingbo has beeninsisting on the artistic standard, the “changeable” studies on the dream of ReadMansions have a constant context. Namely he uses the "literary vision" to see "a dreamof Red Mansions", The conclusion of "change", is insisting on art standard.The third chapter discusses the criticism which is formed in the art and sciencestandards. In this part,we will compare Yu Pingbo to Wang Guowei and Hu Shi, andobtains Yu Pingbo "a dream of Red Mansions" criticism method which is upper andlower both inside and outside. By contrast with Wang, we can see that Yu Pingbo usedthe correct method of literary theory in the process of criticism, and paid more attentionto close reading. In contrast with Hu Shi, Yu Pingbo has the right attitude to the externalfactors in the process of criticism of literature research,and make the criticism centerback to the work itself. Yu Pingbo’s criticism method has advantage, at the same time, italso confined to that Yu Pingbo excessive for the author’s original intention, will impacton the rich implication of their works.The last chapter discusses the enlightenment of Yu Pingbo’s criticism. First, as aredologist, his criticism on the development of contemporary Redology has a typicalmeaning, it reminds researchers to have a correct view of Cao Xueqin’s familybackground in the "a dream of Red Mansions" research. Secondly, to the criticism ofcontemporary literature, Yu Pingbo on the proper application of the theory in the processof criticism and works on the bottom-up reading attention, helps re-examinecontemporary critics of master-slave status on literary theory and literature, acceleratesthe development of contemporary literary criticism and literary theory disciplinereconstruction.
