Over the ancient Liao Dynasty, an empire of many nomadic groups united under the dominance of Khitan people, Buddhism was widely worshiped and underwent a significant development. On the basis of the initiation, development and prosperity of Buddhism in Liao Dynasty, this thesis first examined the start of grotto statues from the figure of immortals and evolvement of them towards that of mortals. The focus is set next on the statues in the caves of the Zhenji Temple. Khitan customs and traditions had, as the author proved, a great influence upon the artistic style of the carvings. In the final part, this thesis discusses the shadow Liao Buddha sculptures casted on those in the following Jin Dynasty. This research has a value in the study of Liao Dynasty art, the history of religion development and the study of nomadic culture fused into Buddhism statues.
