Cuan Longyan Tombstone was erected on the2ndyear in Daming Period of Song SouthernDynasty(458A.D.). And it was recorder in history books in both Yuan and Ming Dynasty. Until DaoguangPeriod in Qing Dynasty, Ruanyuan, the governor of Yunnan, found it, Cuan Longyan Tombstone hadbecome famous. At that time, the study of ancient inscriptions was very popular, so Ruanyuan, KangYouwei and other calligraphers made great efforts to advocate and practice personally. For this reason, thecalligraphy of Cuan Longyan Tombstone had a profound impact.Along with the research on the calligraphy in Northern and Southern Dynasty, especially regular scriptof inscription form continues, the scholars’ understanding of has been advanced. For calligraphy of inkform in Northern and Southern Dynasty, regular script, running script and cursive script were all developed,and the artistic level had developed to an unprecedented height. But since the factors of solemnity,ornament and using ancient characters, writing script of inscription form developed very slowly and it wasjust at the period changing from official script to regular script. This is one of the reasons for which thecalligraphy style of Cuan Longyan Tombstone formed.Firstly, this thesis analyzes the content and writing style of Cuan Longyan Tombstone, and then carryon the research focusing on its calligraphy achievement. The purpose is to reexamine the calligraphy ofCuan Longyan Tombstone by means of traditional calligraphy theories and writing methods and to exploreits great values. After having accurately grasped its writing style, this thesis makes a comparison ofcalligraphy between Cuan Longyan Tombstone and ink form in the same period. Through the comparison,we can make it clear that there were two developing routes of regular script in Northern and SouthernDynasty, and especially reinterpret the significance that the carve workers to the calligraphy of CuanLongyan Tombstone and calligraphy of inscription form during the whole Northern and Southern Dynasty.After this comparison, this thesis makes another comparison between the calligraphy of Cuan LongyanTombstone and inscription form in the same period. Through this comparison, we can find the writing styleof regular script in inscription form represented by the calligraphy of Cuan Longyan Tombstone prevailduring the Northern and Southern Dynasty. This thesis summarizes geographical, social and cultural reasons to explain this phenomenon.To the research on the calligraphy of Cuan Longyan Tombstone, it needs to confirm its significanceand value, what’s more is to serve contemporary calligraphy creation and development. From the aspect ofcalligraphy, Cuan Longyan Tombstone provide us with expansive thinking space and possibility to remodelart.The combination of regular script and official script is the most representative but not the uniquefeature of the calligraphy of Cuan Longyan Tombstone. If this feature is lost in Cuan style calligraphyworks, the works mean nothing at all. Like art losing personality, the aesthetic perception of art andhistorical meaning which a calligraphy work carries will also vanish.Complement the unique feature of Cuan Longyan Tombstone calligraphy with various lines, elaboratecombined strokes and other art methods, then the calligraphy works can exert thousands years’ culture andart aesthetic perception. This thesis mainly explores the space forming and style tendency of Cuan LongyanTombstone calligraphy and based on this exploration, this thesis further expounds the thought on hedevelopment of Cuan style calligraphy and inscription calligraphy.The combination of ancient inscriptions and modern systematic aesthetic consciousness needs to seizethe core of art creation precisely. It is not only the reference of Cuan Longyan Tombstone calligraphystructure and writing skills of writing brush, but to pursue the ancient cultural ambience in Wei and JinDynasty. That is the quintessence which needs to express of Cuan style calligraphy and reappearing oftraditional calligraphy.Referring to the view hold by famous calligraphers and scholars, this thesis combines the art ofcomposition, the art of ink, space structure and rich changing strokes together and expands the creationspace of Cuan style calligraphy. Finally, this thesis hopes to play a promoting role in the development ofcalligraphy and provide theoretical foundation.
