The Research On The Calligraphy Of Xiaoxian

Xiao Xian, one of the most famous female calligraphers in Chinese contemporary calligraphic history, is honored as one of the "Four Celebrities in Jinling". As a famous calligrapher, Xiao Xian has devoted her whole life to the research and practice of epigraphic calligraphy and has made great achievements. Her authoring exemplar provides the subsequent calligraphers with a good deal of studying materials. In this thesis, many researching methods in historiography, fine arts, logistics, etc., are adopted, and they can prove to each other with the combination of art works. The introduction of the thesis focuses on the previous researches on Xiao Xian and her calligraphic art so as to point out the topic value and researching significances of this thesis. The whole thesis is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the life of Xiao Xian and the characteristics of her calligraphic art. By gathering and listing the life stories of Xiao Xian from childhood to the old age, the author primarily introduces the achievements and influences of her calligraphic art, and then summarizes her art characteristics from three aspects:the spirit of Xiao Xian’s calligraphic art-"deliberate, unsophisticated, profound and harmonious", the great spirit of the combination of artistic concept and the combination of various calligraphies which are both tough and genteel.The second chapter makes a detailed research and analysis for the reasons of the development of Xiao Xian’s calligraphic style from three aspect of the integral calligraphic style in Late Qing and Republican period, the influence of family educational background and assiduous pursuit of "Three Stones and One Plate".The third chapter is the comparison of the calligraphic artistic styles of Xiao Xian and other representative female calligraphers of the same time. Three different kinds of styles and characteristics of female calligraphers at the time are presented more clearly in the way of listing with classification. The unique calligraphic artistic characteristics of Xiao Xian can be made more prominent by comparison and listing with classification.The fourth chapter makes a deep analysis and research of Xiao Xian’s status in contemporary calligraphic history. It is shown that she has made a great influence and an irreplaceable unique position in modern and contemporary calligraphic area, and then some drawbacks in her calligraphic works are also discussed further.The conclusion is the summary of the whole thesis. Xiao Xian has devoted her whole life to the creation and research of calligraphic art and the great achievements she has made in calligraphic art are conspicuous despite some drawbacks in her calligraphic art. Therefore, she occupies an irreplaceable position in calligraphic history.
